The
Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire District is a Class 3 combination Department that covers 52 square miles on the south end
of beautiful Myrtle Beach. Our department currently operates out of 3 stations with 33 career staff and plans to build a fourth
station are under way. With our districts rapid growth we are growing to meet the demands of our district. Our department
provides both Fire and EMS coverage to the citizens we protect and respond to approximately 3000 calls a year.
Our Department
operates with state of the art equipment and progressive EMS protocols. We also have on campus training center that includes
a two story live burn building, training maze, LP props, and a four story rappelling tower. We host a variety of Fire classes
for the SC Fire Academy and serve as a satellite American Heart Association Community Training Center.
The District
offers an attractive benefit plan that includes major health and dental plan, State Retirement Plan (25yrs w/o age restriction),
a secondary retirement plan (401k) that is paid through the 1% fund, and paid leave after probationary period of 11.08 hours
per pay period.
Currently our department has openings for FF/Paramedics and FF/ EMT's . Minimum requirements for applicants
are:
NFPA FF-1 or higher
Haz-Mat Operations or higher
NREMT-Paramedic or EMT
ACLS, PALS, BTLS, and BCLS

JOB DESCRIPTION
General Description of Work
The firefighter performs responsible
service work in fire suppression and prevention; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision
of a company and/ or shift commander. Firefighters serve the public by protecting citizens and their property from fire, as
well as responding to different types of emergencies including medical incidents, hazardous materials spills and rescue calls
Typical Tasks
The work which is performed on a rotating shift requires periods
of strenuous physical effort requiring the ability to move as much as 400 lbs.and lift 250 lbs. during fire/rescue operations
using all body extremities to accomplish the task.
The work involves exposure to extreme heat, dirt and other
unpleasant conditions. The employee is exposed to risk of serious injury, requiring the use of protective clothing and equipment
in strict observance of safety precautions and procedures.
Firefighting activities will
include laying and connecting fire hoses, directing fire streams, climbing ladders, ventilating roofs and
smoke filled areas, salvaging building contents, rescuing victims and administering emergency care to sick and injured victims
The wearing of Self Contained
Breathing Apparatus and working in tight confined spaces is required
Firefighters will be required
to participate in continuing education as well as occasionally conduct training with other firefighters
Conducting tours for the public, school and community by demonstrations
and fire safety activities is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Must have and maintain a valid SC drivers
license or current drivers license from another state transferable to SC within 30 days of hire.
Shall have SC OSHA firefighter certification or equivalent
per OSHA 1910.156 Firefighter 1 certification is required within the first year of employment.
Hazardous Materials Operations Level certification
per OSHA 1910.120
SC EMT certification or equivalent, converting to National
Registry in the first six months
Shall be able to successfully complete physical agility testing
within normal time limits as established by past practice.
Employment offer is contingent on successful
completion of medical examination and drug screening by fire department physician
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must pass a basic firefighter written examination
Must pass a basic EMT written examination
Must have the ability to write, read and understand written
rules, instructions and policies of the department.
Probationary Period
New career employees are required to serve a six(6) month
probationary period during which time the performance will be evaluated to determine permanent status , probation extension or termination.

Hiring process
1.Applicant will be given a 100
question Firefighter test as well as a 100 Question Paramedic or EMT written test.
2. Applicant
will then move on to an EMS based practical scenario based on applicants level of certification.
3.Applicant will move
to the agility test. See below for agitlity test information.
4. Finally the applicant will move to the oral interview.
Agility Test
All applicants taking the agility test must sign a
release of liabilty waiver form prior to entering the testing site. Once the waiver is signed applicants will be
screened by on duty paramedics and EMTs for B/P, Heart Rate, O2 saturation, and respiratory rate. Any applicant who does
not fall into the medical guidelines will not be allowed to continue with the agility test. Once the applicant has
completed the test, they will return to medical screening for reevaluation of vital signs by medical personnel.
The agility test will require the applicants
to wear Helmet, Turn out coat, Bunker Pants,firefighting boots, firefighting gloves, approved eye protection, and an SCBA,
applicants will not be required to breath air through there SCBA during the agility test.
Agility Course Outline
Station
1 – Carefully pick up a 14 ft roof ladder from the starting
point, carry ladder to designated area of training tower and set ladder up at 1st floor window, proceed to station
2.
Station 2 – Carefully
pick up (2) 5 gallon jugs filled with water and walk to the designated area, carefully placing both jugs on the ground and
proceed to station 3.
Station 3 – Carefully pick up nozzle and pull a charged 1 ¾ hand line to the designated area, carefully
place nozzle on the ground and proceed to fourth station.
Station 4 – Walk across a balance beam and proceed
to station5.
Station 5– Carefully lower all 7 sandbags from there designated area and place them on the ground, once all bags are on
the ground, carefully return all 7 bags to there starting position and proceed to station 6.
Station 6 – Using a roof hook provided strike a wooden
plate located over test subjects head 10 times, return roof hook to starting position and proceed to station 7.
Station 7 – Carry a 50’ section of 2 ½”
hose to the 3rd floor of the training tower and proceed to station 8.
Station 8– Once you reach the 3rd floor, proceed
to window and pull up in a hand over hand method a donut roll 50’ section of 2 ½ “hose to 3rd
floor window ledge then in the same over hand method return the hose roll to the ground, once completed pick up 50’
section of 2 ½” high-rise pack and return it to the starting position on the ground floor. Proceed to station
9.
Station 9 – In designated
area under the training tower candidate will complete 10 push ups. Once completed proceed to station 10.
Station 10 – Candidate will proceed to large black
pipe and crawl through the pipe to the other end. Once through proceed to station eleven.
Station 11 – Candidate
will carefully pick same (2) 5 gallon jugs and return them to original position under the training tower. Candidate will then
proceed to final station.
Final Station – Candidate will carefully lower 14’ roof ladder from 1st floor window and return it to its
starting position. This will conclude the agility test. Candidate will then proceed to medical rehab.
